SAN FRANCISCO, CA—The San Francisco Symphony’s Film Series returns in the 2021–22 season, featuring the Orchestra performing the live accompaniment to iconic films as they are projected on a large screen above the stage. The Film Series kicks off September 22–23 with Rob Reiner’s The Princess Bride, featuring Sarah Hicks conducting the SF Symphony in Mark Knopfler’s original soundtrack, followed by Ron Howard’s Academy Award®-winning drama Apollo 13 with Constantine Kitsopoulos leading the Orchestra in music by James Horner, September 24–25. Film programming continues during the holidays with performances of Richard Curtis’ Love Actually December 14–15, featuring Thiago Tiberio conducting the SF Symphony in music by Craig Armstrong, and Chris Columbus’ Home Alone with a score by John Williams, conducted by Joshua Gersen, December 16 and 18. On January 7–8, Constantine Kitsopoulos leads performances of Robert Zemeckis’ Back to the Future featuring music by Alan Silvestri. Additional film presentations include Sam Mendes’ Skyfall March 16–17, featuring David Newman conducting Thomas Newman’s score, and Disney and Pixar’s Toy Story in Concert March 18–19, featuring a screening of the complete film with Oscar® and Grammy®-winning composer Randy Newman’s score performed live by the SF Symphony and conducted by Christopher Dragon. Concluding the 2021–22 season Film Series is The Matrix, directed by the Wachowskis and featuring Don Davis conducting his own score, July 1–2.
 
The SF Symphony’s 2021–22 season also includes special presentations of Buster Keaton’s silent film The General, featuring musical accompaniment by organist Cameron Carpenter, on March 27, and Get Happy: A Judy Garland Centennial Celebration, an event commemorating the life of Judy Garland with the San Francisco Symphony and guest artists performing works from her legendary songbook, accompanied by rare performance footage, intimate home movies, cherished photographs, and interviews projected live-to-screen, on June 29.

  • Davies Symphony Hall is currently operating at full audience capacity. The San Francisco Symphony requires proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 for everyone ages 12 and up entering Davies Symphony Hall—including patrons, performers, volunteers, and staff. Full vaccination is defined as completion of the two-dose regimen of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or one dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine administered two weeks or more in advance of the concert. Audience members under age 12 must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test (PCR test within 72 hours of the event, or antigen [rapid] test within 24 hours of the event).
