Volunteer Council

The Junior Committee League of the San Francisco Symphony is a group of individuals who support the organization through their fundraising, audience development, and community engagement activities. The Junior Committee was founded in 1980 and is one of the volunteer membership groups in the Bay Area coordinated by the Symphony’s Volunteer Council. The League’s mission is to encourage audience development, encourage community service, and raise funds for the Symphony’s community and education programs.

The Junior Committee’s major fundraising event is the Deck the Hall holiday concert. Deck the Hall is an annual Bay Area tradition, featuring two family concerts in Davies Symphony Hall that include a post-­concert reception complete with children’s activities and entertainment. This event directly supports Deck the Hall Community Day, which brings 4,000 children from public programs to this holiday concert, free of charge, providing many of them with their first opportunity to visit a concert hall and hear a live orchestral performance. Deck the Hall proceeds also benefit the San Francisco Symphony’s education and community programs, which reach over 75,000 Bay Area students annually. For more information visit sfsymphony.org/deck.

The Junior Committee meets once a month during the Symphony season and focuses on its major fundraiser as well as a variety of local social and musical events and San Francisco Symphony concerts at Davies Symphony Hall.

The Upper Peninsula League of the San Francisco Symphony was founded by Peninsula residents in 1973. It is one of the Symphony’s volunteer membership groups in the Bay Area, coordinated by the Volunteer Council, also established in 1973. The League’s mission is to support the organization through fundraising, audience development and community engagement activities. 

Upper Peninsula League members enjoy supporting the Symphony’s Concerts for Kids program which introduces school children to classical music. For twenty-four years, in cooperation with the San Mateo/Foster City School District, the League has provided volunteer docents, ticket assistance, and transportation for students. 

Seniors to the Symphony, a program developed by the Upper Peninsula League, provides chartered transportation for nearly 100 seniors from local Peninsula senior centers to Davies Symphony Hall for a performance by the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra each year. League members prepare box lunches for them, making this a special and much appreciated outing.

Members enjoy unique opportunities throughout the year to participate in various programs and special events that enrich their San Francisco Symphony experience. General meetings are held the third Monday of the month, with a business meeting followed by either a musical performance or educational speaker.

The League’s annual fundraising event, Hats Off to the Symphony, will be held on Wednesday, April 19 at Green Hills Country Club in Millbrae. The afternoon includes seated luncheon with silent auction and live performance by jazz ensemble “In the Mix”. For ticket information, call 415-503-5379.

The Silicon Valley League of the San Francisco Symphony was founded in 2001 by Peninsula residents who support and enjoy the San Francisco Symphony. It is one of the Symphony’s volunteer membership groups in the Bay Area and coordinated by the Volunteer Council, established in 1973. The League’s mission is to encourage community service, support the Symphony in audience development, and raise funds for the Symphony’s community and education programs.

The League’s primary community focus is music education through the Symphony’s Concerts for Kids Program which introduces school children to the wonders of symphonic music. Interested League members train as docents and prepare students from local schools to attend these special concerts at Davies Symphony Hall. Each season, the League provides volunteer docents, tickets and transportation for students from the Castro, and Theuerkauf schools in Mountain View to the Symphony’s Concerts for Kids programs at Davies Symphony Hall.

Throughout the year, League members enjoy a variety of local social and musical events, music-oriented lectures and trips, and San Francisco Symphony concerts at Davies Symphony Hall. Six general meetings are held each season, include wine and hors d’oeuvres, and are followed by business meeting and either a musical performance or educational speaker. Members’ spouses or partners are welcome to attend the 60–80 person meetings.

The Metropolitan League of the San Francisco Symphony was founded by San Francisco residents who support and enjoy the San Francisco Symphony. It is one of the Symphony’s volunteer membership groups in the Bay Area coordinated by the Volunteer Council, established in 1973. The League’s mission is to support the organization through fundraising, audience development, and community engagement activities.

Throughout the year, League members enjoy a variety of local social and musical events and San Francisco Symphony concerts at Davies Symphony Hall. General meetings are held in the evenings the second Monday of each month and include a brief business meeting followed by either a musical performance or educational speaker.

Join the Metropolitan League for lunch, music and magic on Saturday, May 20, 2023. The “Luncheon of the Boating Party” themed event inspired by Renoir’s painting of the same name will bring people together to support the Symphony while enjoying a live music and magical performance! The event includes lunch plus a silent auction and Fund-A-Need to raise funds for the San Francisco Symphony and its community engagement and education programs. It is one of the Symphony’s volunteer membership groups in the Bay Area coordinated by the Volunteer Council, established in 1973. The League’s mission is to support the organization through fundraising, audience development, and community engagement activities.

The League’s primary fundraising event, Día de los Muertos Celebration, is on November 4, 2023. The event is coupled with the Symphony’s annual Día de los Muertos Concert and includes premium concert seating, a post­-concert seated dinner, and a silent auction. Check back soon for more details!

The Mid‐Peninsula League of the San Francisco Symphony was founded in 1973, the same year that the Volunteer Council was established. The League’s mission is to support the Symphony and its education and community programs, promote audience development, and provide a social community for Peninsula residents interested in classical music.

The League’s longstanding community focus is on music education provided through the Symphony’s Concerts for Kids program, which introduces young children to classical music. Each year, a group of League members trains as docents to prepare students from the Ravenswood School District of East Palo Alto and Eastern Menlo Park to attend these specially curated concerts. Called the Ravenswood Project, League docents teach hundreds of local third graders annually about classical music and orchestral instruments, then chaperone them at a Concerts for Kids performance at Davies Symphony Hall. For many of the children, this is their first live orchestral concert experience. The League also fundraises to provide these students with concert tickets and transportation to Davies Symphony Hall. 

Throughout the year, League members enjoy a variety of social and musical events, music‐oriented lectures and trips, and SF Symphony concerts. General meetings are typically held the last Monday of the month in the late morning, and business meetings are followed by a musical performance or a presentation by a Symphony representative. Additional evening events take place throughout the year. Since 2000, the League has produced a Music Study Program which has featured an array of experts in music history and theory.

The Mid‐Peninsula League’s annual fundraiser, Symphony in Flowers, supports the San Francisco Symphony’s community and education programs. This year Symphony in Flowers will be on April 30 at the Rosewood Sand Hill Hotel in Menlo Park. The event includes an elegant seated dinner, silent auction, and concert by jazz quartet Pingel-Hainsworth-Saunders-Stephan. For tickets call 415-503-5351 or visit sfsymphony.org/flowers.

The Marin League of the San Francisco Symphony was founded in 1965 by North Bay residents who support and enjoy the San Francisco Symphony. It is one of the Symphony’s volunteer membership groups in the Bay Area coordinated by the Volunteer Council, established in 1973. The League’s mission is to support the organization through fundraising, audience development, and community engagement activities.

The League’s primary community focus is music education through the San Francisco Symphony’s Concerts for Kids program. Interested League members train as docents and prepare students from schools around the Bay Area to attend Concert for Kids programs performed by the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Symphony Hall.

Throughout the year, League members enjoy a variety of local social and musical events, and San Francisco Symphony concerts at Davies Symphony Hall. Monthly general meetings are held in the evening and include a business meeting followed by either a musical performance or educational speaker.
